Overview

Opened in 1938 in a former 18th-century York prison, the museum's star attraction is Kirkgate, a full-scale recreated Victorian street complete with shops, gas lamps, and carriages that lets visitors step back into daily life over a century ago. Original prison cells remain intact, offering a look at the era's penal system, and a recreated 1960s street plus a WWI exhibit are also popular. Adult admission about GBP 13. Right next to Clifford's Tower.
