Kotagede, Yogyakarta

Overview

Kotagede was the first capital of the Islamic Mataram Sultanate in the late 1500s, and traces of the old royal cemetery and traditional Javanese houses survive there today. Since the 19th century it has developed into a center of silver craftsmanship, and its narrow lanes are still lined with silversmith workshops and shops. Visitors can combine a stroll through the old alleys with shopping for silver rings and jewelry.
