Overview
First built around 1600 to defend Cork Harbour from pirates, the castle was rebuilt in its current Gothic Revival style after an 1827 fire. Today it houses the Blackrock Castle Observatory, doubling as a science center with interactive exhibits on space and astronomy. Set at the mouth of the River Lee, its silhouette is striking from the riverside walkway, and the on-site restaurant offers river-view dining. Admission about EUR 8 (observatory exhibits). About 15 minutes by bus from central Cork.
Travel Tips
The observatory exhibits are especially popular with kids. Book dinner at the castle restaurant for river views.
