Overview
Founded by Anglo-Normans in the 1170s, Youghal is a medieval walled port town with some of Ireland's best-preserved town walls. Its landmark Clock Gate Tower (1777), once used as a jail, is tied to Sir Walter Raleigh, who served as the town's mayor in the 1620s and is credited by legend with planting Ireland's first potatoes here. The 1956 film Moby Dick, starring Gregory Peck, was filmed in the town, with plaques marking filming spots throughout. Its long sandy beach is also a popular summer getaway. Free to visit. About 45 minutes from Cork by car.
