Overview
Completed in 1677, this European-style star fort was built to guard the entrance to Kinsale Harbour and is one of Ireland's best-preserved star forts. Its construction followed the 1601 Battle of Kinsale, which underscored the harbor's strategic importance; British troops garrisoned it for 300 years until parts were burned by withdrawing forces after Irish independence in 1922. The ramparts offer spectacular views of Kinsale Harbour and the Atlantic, and summer brings guided tours and historical reenactments.
