Overview
Built as a votive offering after the plague that struck Venice in 1630, this baroque church was designed by Baldassare Longhena, begun in 1631, and completed in 1687. Its octagonal plan topped by a huge dome defines the skyline at the Grand Canal's mouth, and the interior holds works by Titian and Tintoretto. Every November 21, the Feast of the Salute, a temporary pontoon bridge lets visitors walk across the Grand Canal to it. Entry to the church is free; the sacristy charges a small fee.
