Overview
Settled by refugees fleeing the mainland from the 5th to 7th centuries, Torcello was the first island to flourish in the Venetian lagoon, once a city of some 20,000 people before malaria and silting canals caused its decline; today fewer than a dozen residents remain. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, built in 639, still stands, famed for its Byzantine mosaics of the Last Judgment and the Madonna Enthroned. Ernest Hemingway was known to favor the island, which is connected to Burano by a bridge and reachable on foot. Cathedral admission is about EUR 5.
Travel Tips
Pair it with Burano for a half-day trip; the island is sparsely visited, perfect for a quiet stroll.
