Overview
Built in 828 after Venetian merchants smuggled the relics of St. Mark from Alexandria, the current structure dates to a 1063 reconstruction. It is renowned for roughly 8,000 square meters of gold mosaics covering its interior and facade, plus four bronze horse statues (the originals are displayed inside). The building blends Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic styles. Entry to the nave is free, while the Pala d'Oro golden altarpiece and the terrace require separate tickets (about EUR 5-7). It sits right beside the Doge's Palace on St. Mark's Square.
