Overview
Seat of the Hokuzan kingdom that ruled northern Okinawa before unification in 1429, its walls — begun in the 13th century — snake 1.5km along the ridgeline. The wave-like curves, hugging natural terrain, show a gusuku aesthetic unlike any mainland castle, with the East China Sea spread below. In late January the deep-pink kanhizakura along the ramparts open Japan's earliest cherry season. Just 15 minutes by car from Churaumi.
