Overview
The palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom (1429-1879) blends Chinese and Japanese styles unlike anywhere else in Japan. The 2019 fire destroyed the main hall, but the ongoing 'visible restoration' — centuries-old techniques performed in public view, targeting completion in 2026 — has become a draw in its own right. The curving stone ramparts, Shureimon Gate and the World Heritage Sonohyan-utaki stone gate all survived, and the high walls overlook Naha and the sea.
