Overview

True to its name — 'above the waves' — this shrine crowns a sea cliff and ranked first among the eight royal shrines of the Ryukyu Kingdom, built on a site sacred to the Niraikanai faith in a paradise beyond the sea. The view of its vermilion hall from the beach below is a Naha signature. Adjacent Naminoue Beach is the city's only swimming beach, walkable from the monorail — ideal for one last swim before your flight.
