Overview
Built in 1958 by architect Vann Molyvann to commemorate independence from France in 1953, the Independence Monument takes a lotus-bud form inspired by the towers of Angkor Wat and Banteay Srei. Standing at the roundabout where Norodom and Sihanouk Boulevards meet, it's an iconic Phnom Penh landmark, especially striking when lit at night. Wreath-laying ceremonies are held here on Independence Day and the King's birthday. Free to view (exterior). About a 15-minute walk from the Royal Palace.
