Overview
Established in 1817 just after the British conquest of the Kingdom of Kandy, the Garrison Cemetery holds the graves of British colonial officials, soldiers, and their families who died of tropical disease and accidents. Just a few minutes' walk from the Temple of the Tooth yet rarely visited, it has a quiet, contemplative atmosphere, and the gravestone inscriptions offer a window into life and death in 19th-century colonial Ceylon. The well-tended garden is also pleasant to stroll. Free admission (donations welcome). A 5-minute walk from the Temple of the Tooth.
