Overview
Established in 1821 during the British colonial era, the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya cover 60 hectares and house around 4,000 plant species. The orchid house alone holds more than 300 varieties. Highlights include the towering canopy of the Java fig tree, a spice garden, and a bamboo garden, plus broad lawns perfect for picnics. Admission LKR 2,000 for foreigners. About 20 minutes by bus from central Kandy.
