Overview
The Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) enshrines a sacred tooth of the Buddha and is the spiritual heart of Sri Lanka's UNESCO-listed Kandy historic quarter. Built in the 16th-17th centuries, it dazzles with a gilded roof and intricate woodwork. During July-August's Esala Perahera, the relic is paraded through the city atop elephants in a majestic ceremony. Admission LKR 2,000 for foreigners. In central Kandy, right next to Kandy Lake.

Three daily relic veneration ceremonies (dawn, morning, evening) make great timed visits. The July-August Esala Perahera is Sri Lanka's biggest festival.
