Overview
Founded in 1975, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is the world's largest facility for rescuing and caring for orphaned or injured wild elephants. The highlight is watching the herd march to the Ma Oya River for their twice-daily bath, and visitors can also watch baby elephants being bottle-fed. The gift shop selling paper crafts made from elephant dung is an interesting stop too. Admission about LKR 4,000 for foreigners. About 1 hour by car from Kandy.
