Overview
The Avukana Buddha, carved from a single granite outcrop during the reign of King Dhatusena in the 5th century, stands over 14m tall, one of Sri Lanka's largest ancient Buddha statues. Depicted in the Asisa Mudra pose of blessing, its intricately carved robe folds remain remarkably clear even after 1,500 years, showcasing the pinnacle of ancient Sri Lankan sculpture. It's most beautiful when early morning sunlight strikes the statue. Admission about LKR 500. About 1 hour by car from Sigiriya.
