Overview
Sri Lanka's capital for roughly 1,300 years from the 4th century BC, Anuradhapura is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of Sri Lankan Buddhist civilization. Vast ruins spread across a huge area, including the Sri Maha Bodhi tree said to be grown from a cutting of the Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, and the massive white-domed Ruwanwelisaya stupa. Most visitors explore by bicycle or tuk-tuk over a full day. Much larger in scale than Sigiriya and a deeply significant pilgrimage site. Admission USD 25 for foreigners. About 2 hours by car from Sigiriya.
Travel Tips
The site is vast - renting a bike or tuk-tuk is recommended. Cover knees and shoulders when visiting Sri Maha Bodhi.
