Overview
The Aluvihare Rock Temple sits on a rocky hill in the Matale area, historically significant as the site where 500 monks gathered in the 1st century BC to first commit the previously oral Pali Tripitaka (Buddhist scriptures) to writing on ola (palm) leaves. The shrine hall inside the natural cave displays murals depicting the Buddha's life and ancient manuscripts, and demonstrations of traditional ola-leaf inscription can also be seen. Conveniently located on the route between Kandy and Sigiriya. Admission about LKR 300. Near Matale, on the Kandy-to-Sigiriya route.
