Overview
Built atop a 200m rock by King Kashyapa I in the 5th century, Sigiriya is a UNESCO-listed palace complex. After climbing roughly 1,200 stairs you reach the foundations of the palace, ancient pools, and garden remains, with sweeping 360-degree views. Halfway up, the famous Lion's Paws (Sigiriya means 'Lion Rock') and the Mirror Wall are also must-sees. Admission USD 30 (about LKR 9,000) for foreigners. About 30 minutes by bus from Dambulla.

Arrive at opening to beat the heat and the crowds. The stairs are very steep - wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water.
