Overview
Ek Balam ('Black Jaguar') near Valladolid draws far fewer visitors than nearby sites, making for a peaceful visit. The facade of its 32m 'Acropolis' temple features a gaping jaguar-mouth doorway and remarkably preserved stucco carvings of winged warriors, showcasing Maya artistry at its finest. It's one of the few remaining Maya sites where you can still climb to the top of the main structure, with jungle views stretching to the horizon. Admission MXN 100. About 2 hours 20 minutes by car from Cancun.
