Overview
Isla Contoy, an uninhabited island about 30km north of Cancun, was designated a national park in 1998 with a strict daily visitor cap of around 200 people. More than 200 bird species live here, including pelicans, frigatebirds, and flamingos, with a major frigatebird breeding colony visible around June. Surrounding reefs offer snorkeling with turtles and tropical fish, and a small museum and observation tower explain the ecosystem. With zero commercial development, it's one of the purest natural experiences in the region. Boat tours about $90-120 (includes admission, snorkeling, and lunch). About 1 hour by boat from Cancun or Isla Mujeres.
