Overview
Munich's central square since 1158, Marienplatz is fronted by the Neo-Gothic New Town Hall, whose Glockenspiel performs daily at 11:00 and 12:00 - 32 figurines reenacting 16th-century events. Below the square is Munich's largest shopping mall, and the Christmas season brings one of Germany's most famous Christmas markets here. It's the essential starting point for any Munich visit.
