Overview
Commissioned by King Ludwig I in the early 19th century and designed by architect Leo von Klenze, Odeonsplatz reflects his vision of remaking Munich into an Italian-style city of art. On the square's south side, the Feldherrnhalle (Field Marshals' Hall), modeled on Florence's Loggia dei Lanzi and completed in 1844, also carries a darker history — it's where Hitler's 1923 Beer Hall Putsch was crushed. To the west, the Theatinerkirche, built from 1663 in Late Baroque style, holds a royal crypt with the remains of 49 members of the Wittelsbach dynasty. The mustard-yellow facades give the square an Italian piazza feel, earning it the nickname 'a piece of Italy in Munich.'
