Overview
Officially the Church of St. Johann Nepomuk, Asamkirche was built between 1733 and 1746 by brothers Cosmas Damian Asam and Egid Quirin Asam — painter and sculptor respectively — as their own private chapel, funded from their own pockets. Squeezed onto a narrow lot on Sendlinger Straße, the facade is tight, but the interior is a masterpiece of Late Baroque and Rococo design, covered floor to ceiling in frescoes and gilded carvings. The space is symbolically divided into three levels — earth, emperor, and heaven — with window placements designed for dramatic shafts of natural light. It remains an active church today.
