Overview
Located in Oberschleißheim just north of Munich, this palace complex links three palaces — the Old Palace (early 1600s), the New Palace (completed 1701-1726), and Lustheim Palace (1684-1688) — through a sprawling Baroque garden. Modeled on Versailles, the New Palace represents the height of Bavarian Baroque architecture, with dazzling frescoes and a grand staircase hall. Lustheim Palace houses one of Europe's largest collections of Baroque paintings, and in summer, fountains along the grand canal in front of the palace erupt every 30 minutes in a spectacular display. With far fewer crowds than central Munich's palaces, it's a hidden gem for soaking in royal atmosphere at a relaxed pace.
