Overview
Completed in 1494, Munich Cathedral is a red-brick Late Gothic church whose two 99-meter towers, each topped with a distinctive onion dome, define the city skyline. The domes were meant to be pointed spires but were capped this way in 1525 due to budget constraints — and five centuries later, they've become inseparable from Munich's identity. Inside, legend tells of a black footprint known as the 'Devil's Footstep,' and the tomb of Holy Roman Emperor Louis IV lies within. Climb the south tower's viewing platform for views over Marienplatz and toward the Alps. Heavily damaged in WWII bombing, the cathedral was restored after the war.
