Overview
This museum holds the original David, the 5.17m masterpiece Michelangelo completed in his 20s over four years. Capturing David in the tense moment before facing Goliath, it is the supreme achievement of Renaissance sculpture, moved here in 1873 from Piazza della Signoria for protection. The statue stands in the 9.4m-tall Tribune hall, joined by Michelangelo's four unfinished 'Slaves' and collections of Byzantine and Gothic painting. Coming face-to-face with David is a peak Florence experience. Admission about EUR 16 (online booking essential). 10-minute walk from the Duomo.
