Overview
Completed in 1382, this Gothic triple-arched loggia was originally built for the Republic's official ceremonies, later gaining its name when Cosimo I's Swiss and German mercenaries (the Lanzi) guarded it from the 16th century. Mannerist sculpture masterpieces such as Cellini's bronze Perseus with the Head of Medusa and Giambologna's Rape of the Sabine Women and Hercules and the Centaur stand on open display, free for anyone to view. Located between the Palazzo Vecchio and the Uffizi.
Travel Tips
It's the best free sculpture gallery in the city, so don't skip it when passing Piazza della Signoria. It looks even more dramatic once lit up at night.
