Overview

Built in the 11th-12th centuries in Romanesque style, this octagonal building is where many Florentines, including Dante, were baptized. The east doors, Ghiberti's 'Gates of Paradise' (named by Michelangelo), are a masterpiece of bronze relief; the doors on site today are replicas, with the originals preserved in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo. The 13th-century Byzantine-style gold mosaic ceiling depicting the Last Judgment is equally stunning. Admission included in the Duomo combination ticket.
