Kyushu National Museum

Dazaifu, Fukuoka

Overview

Opened in 2005 as Japan's fourth national museum, its theme — Japanese culture seen through Asian exchange — suits Fukuoka, the historic gateway to the continent. The 160m wave of glass set against the hills is a sight in itself, and the 4th-floor Cultural Exchange gallery walks from the Paleolithic to Edo through artifacts of exchange with Korea and China. A moving-walkway 'rainbow tunnel' connects it directly to Dazaifu Tenmangu behind the shrine.

💰 Tickets

Permanent exhibition JPY 700 (adults), JPY 350 (university students), free for high-school age and under; special exhibitions extra (around JPY 1,600-2,000).
