Tochoji Temple (Fukuoka Daibutsu)

Hakata-ku, Fukuoka

Overview

Said to be the first esoteric temple founded by Kobo Daishi (Kukai) after his return from Tang China in 806. Upstairs in the main hall sits the Fukuoka Daibutsu — a 10.8m, 30-ton wooden seated Shakyamuni completed in 1992, among Japan's largest. Beneath its pedestal runs the 'hell and paradise' passage: shuffle through pitch darkness and touch the Buddha's ring for a promise of paradise. The vermilion five-story pagoda and the Kuroda lords' graves share the grounds, right beside Gion Station and an easy pair with Kushida Shrine.
