Sumiyoshi Shrine Fukuoka

Overview

Held to be the original of Japan's Sumiyoshi shrines to the gods of safe seafaring, with over 1,800 years of history. The main hall (rebuilt 1623) is an Important Cultural Property in the sumiyoshi-zukuri style predating Buddhism's arrival. Statues of yokozuna and a 'power deity' draw sumo fans — press your palm to the statue's to receive its strength. A forested refuge 10 minutes on foot from Hakata Station.
