Dazaifu Tenmangu
This is the head shrine among some 12,000 Tenmangu shrines nationwide, enshrining Sugawara no Michizane (845-903), revered as the deity of scholarship. Plum motifs decorate the approach and halls, and to the right of the main hall stands the legendary 'Tobiume' — the plum tree said to have flown here overnight out of longing for Michizane. Don't miss umegae-mochi rice cakes (about JPY 150 each) along the approach, or the Kengo Kuma-designed Starbucks. Grounds are free, and it's about 30 minutes from Tenjin by Nishitetsu train — an easy half-day trip.
