Overview
Built in 1482 by shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa in imitation of Kinkaku-ji, Ginkaku-ji was never actually covered in silver, yet it is considered the pinnacle of understated 'wabi-sabi' aesthetics. Unique highlights include the cone-shaped sand mound 'Kogetsudai' and the wave-patterned sand garden 'Ginshadan,' while a hillside viewpoint offers views over Kyoto. A UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admission JPY 500. A 5-minute walk from the Ginkakuji-michi bus stop (city bus 5 or 17).
