Overview

The Kyoto Imperial Palace served as the residence and enthronement site for generations of Japanese emperors for over 500 years, from the 794 move to Heian-kyo until Emperor Meiji relocated to Tokyo in 1869. The current buildings, rebuilt in 1855, preserve Heian-era court architecture, including the Shishinden hall where enthronement ceremonies were held. The surrounding Kyoto Gyoen park is open to the public as a relaxing green space, also known for cherry and plum blossoms. Free admission (no reservation needed; open year-round). A 5-minute walk from Imadegawa Station (Karasuma Line).
