Overview
Completed in 1964, the year of the Tokyo Olympics, the 131m Kyoto Tower was designed as a lighthouse to symbolically illuminate landlocked Kyoto. Its construction sparked controversy for disrupting the height-restricted cityscape, but it has since become an iconic landmark in front of Kyoto Station. From the observation deck at 100m, visitors can see across the city and, on clear days, as far as Osaka and Lake Biwa. Observatory admission JPY 900. Directly in front of Kyoto Station's central exit (JR/Kintetsu).
