Overview
Squeezed between the Kamo River and Kiyamachi Street, Pontocho is a narrow entertainment alley barely 1.5m wide, a traditional Kyoto nightlife district dating to the Edo period. Wooden buildings line the alley, housing exclusive teahouses, kaiseki restaurants, and izakaya, and from May to September restaurants set up open-air 'kawadoko' terraces along the Kamo River for dining in the river breeze. Along with Gion, it remains a center of Kyoto's geiko and maiko culture. Free to explore. A 3-minute walk from Gion-Shijo Station (Keihan Line).

The summer-only kawadoko terraces require advance reservations. The alley is narrow, so keep quiet and avoid blocking foot traffic.
