Overview
Founded in 1164, Sanjusangen-do gets its name from the 33 (sanjusan) bays between the pillars of its main hall. Inside the 118m-long hall stand 1,000 life-size gilded statues of the thousand-armed Kannon plus a central seated statue — 1,001 in total, the largest such collection in Japan. It is also famous for hosting the 'Toshiya' archery contest every January. Designated a National Treasure. Admission JPY 600. Take bus 100, 206, or 208 from Kyoto Station to Sanjusangendo-mae.
