Overview
Founded in 1339 by Ashikaga Takauji to pray for Emperor Go-Daigo's soul, Tenryu-ji is a Rinzai Zen temple ranked first among Kyoto's five great Zen temples. Its Sogenchi Garden, designed by Muso Soseki, is a masterpiece of 'borrowed scenery' incorporating Mt. Arashiyama and Mt. Kameyama into its composition, and was Japan's first officially designated Historic Site and Special Place of Scenic Beauty. It connects directly to the entrance of the bamboo grove, making it a great starting point for exploring Arashiyama. A UNESCO World Heritage Site. Garden admission JPY 500. A 13-minute walk from JR Saga-Arashiyama Station.
Travel Tips
