Overview
Ryoan-ji, founded in 1450 as a Rinzai Zen temple, is world-famous for its karesansui (dry landscape) garden — a 230㎡ rectangle of raked white gravel containing 15 stones arranged so that from any viewing angle, at least one stone is always hidden. It is considered the pinnacle of Japanese Zen aesthetics expressing the beauty of the incomplete. Sitting before the garden in meditation offers a rare moment of stillness in the heart of the city. A UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admission JPY 600. Take city bus 59 to Ryoanji-mae stop.
Opening Hours
