Overview
Gion has been Kyoto's premier geisha district since the 17th century, with traditional wooden machiya houses and narrow stone-paved lanes creating a timeless atmosphere. Hanamikoji Street is lined with exclusive ochaya (geisha teahouses) and kaiseki restaurants, and at dusk you might glimpse a maiko (apprentice geisha) or geiko on their way to work. Cherry trees lining the Shirakawa canal are especially magical in spring. Combine with nearby Yasaka Shrine. Free to explore. A 5-minute walk from Gion-Shijo Station (Keihan Line).
Opening Hours
Open 24 hours (shops roughly 17:00-23:00)
Travel Tips
Chasing geisha for photos or entering private spaces is banned and subject to fines. The January debut ceremony and July's Gion Matsuri are famous events.
