Overview
Thirty minutes from Nagoya by train, Inuyama Castle rises from a bluff over the Kiso River — one of only twelve surviving original keeps and five National Treasure castles (with Himeji, Matsumoto, Hikone and Matsue), its wooden keep unchanged since 1537. Climb the creaking stairs to the open top-floor balcony and the river, the Nobi plain and even Nagoya spread below a single railing — among the most thrilling castle views in Japan. The Edo-styled Honmachi-dori castle town below strings together skewer and sweets shops, and Urakuen garden with the National Treasure Jo-an teahouse is a short walk.
Opening Hours
9:00-17:00 (last entry 16:30; closed Dec 29-31)
🚇 Getting there
About 30 minutes from Meitetsu Nagoya Station to Inuyama-yuen (express, JPY 640), then 15 on foot — or walk up through the castle town from Inuyama Station.
⏱️ How long to visit
About half a day — 3-4 hours with the castle town.
🌅 Best time to visit
Early April, when cherry blossoms wrap the castle, and summer evenings of cormorant fishing on the Kiso are special; weekend middays mean keep-entry queues.
Travel Tips
The keep's stairs are ladder-steep — wear grippy shoes. Castle-town snack shops close by 15:00-17:00, so graze early.
