Overview
Built from 1610 on Tokugawa Ieyasu's orders as the seat of the Owari Tokugawa clan, the castle is symbolized by the pair of golden shachihoko on its keep. The keep itself is closed for seismic concerns, but the Honmaru Palace — rebuilt over a decade using traditional joinery, its rooms sheathed in gold-leaf paintings and ornate metal fittings — more than compensates. The Kinshachi Yokocho food alley by the gates gathers Nagoya-meshi under one roof, and the grounds are a famed cherry-blossom spot in spring.
