Completed in 1953 to commemorate Sri Lanka's 1948 independence from Britain, the Independence Memorial Hall is modeled on a Kandyan royal audience hall, with striking white columns and detailed carvings. The plaza in front is a favorite spot for Colombo locals to jog and stroll. Nearby Independence Arcade boutique mall and trendy cafes make for easy sightseeing-plus-shopping. Free admission.
