Overview
Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara is said to be the very spot the Buddha visited during a trip to Sri Lanka eight years before his passing, making it one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Sri Lankan Buddhists, alongside Anuradhapura and Kandy's Temple of the Tooth. Vivid murals fill the interior of the shrine hall, and every January the Duruthu Perahera festival brings a spectacular elephant procession. A place to experience local devotion up close, just outside Colombo. Free admission (donations welcome). About 30 minutes by tuk-tuk from Colombo.
