Overview
About 12km south of central Colombo, Mount Lavinia is a beach town where the clifftop Mount Lavinia Hotel, once the 19th-century residence of a British governor, now overlooks the sea. Its wide sandy beach and Indian Ocean waves make it Colombo's closest proper swimming spot, and beachside restaurants serve fresh seafood with sunset views. An ideal half-day escape from the bustle of downtown. Free admission (beach). About 30 minutes by train or tuk-tuk from central Colombo.
Travel Tips
Taking the train is cheap and fast. Consider afternoon tea on the terrace of the Mount Lavinia Hotel.
