Overview
Grossmünster is a Romanesque cathedral on the east bank of the Limmat in Zurich's Old Town, its twin towers defining the city skyline. In 1519, Ulrich Zwingli launched the Swiss Reformation here, making it a site of deep historical significance. The crypt holds a statue of Charlemagne. Climb the south tower for a 360-degree view of the Old Town, lake, and Alps. Notable artworks include stained glass by Augusto Giacometti and modern windows by Sigmar Polke. Cathedral entry free; tower viewing about CHF 5. Tram 4/15 to Helmhaus stop.
Opening Hours
Daily 10:00-18:00 (until 17:00 November-February).
Travel Tips
The tower involves narrow stairs but offers Zurich's best affordable viewpoint. Don't skip the Romanesque column carvings or the crypt inside.
