Las Bóvedas (The Vaults)

Old Town, Cartagena

Overview

Las Bóvedas is a row of 23 vaulted underground storerooms built between 1789 and 1798 under Spanish military engineer Antonio de Arévalo. Located within the city walls between the Santa Clara and Santa Catalina bastions, the vaults originally stored ammunition and supplies and later served as a prison. Today each arch houses a souvenir shop selling hats, hammocks, coffee, and handicrafts, making it a popular spot for browsing and bargaining. The rampart walkway above offers sweeping views of the Caribbean Sea and the Bocagrande skyline, making it a favorite photo stop. There is no admission fee, and it's a great final stop on a walk along the city walls.
