Plaza de Santo Domingo

Old Town, Cartagena

Overview

Plaza de Santo Domingo is home to Cartagena's oldest church, the Santo Domingo church, built between 1578 and 1630. The square has a dark colonial history tied to Inquisition-era punishments. Its modern-day icon is a bronze sculpture donated by Colombian artist Fernando Botero in 2000, 'Figura Reclinada 92,' affectionately nicknamed 'Gorda Gertrudis' - visitors rub her chest for good luck in love, which has left that spot noticeably polished. The plaza is ringed with open-air cafes and restaurants, perfect for a sunset meal with live music. Both the church interior and the sculpture are free to view.

Opening Hours

The plaza is open 24 hours; the church is generally open daily 08:00-18:00.
